Bio Oil: Does Bio Oil Work?

Bio Oil Review

While Bio Oil has been clinically tested and appears to be somewhat effective at reducing the appearance of scars, it is not the best scar treatment available due to its use of mineral oil as its main ingredient.

Bio Oil claims to help improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone with the use of PurCellin Oil. Touted as a laboratory recreation of the preen gland oil of ducks, PurCellin is supposed to allow the oil based ingredients of Bio Oil to more easily absorb into the skin. According to clinical trial on Bio Oil, 65% of the subjects tested exhibited an improvement in the appearance of their scars within 4 weeks. However, this is only one test that was only conducted on Caucasians and does not tell how much improvement the scars had from using this product. The other problem that arises with this product is the fact that the oil in this product can clog pores, leading to acne and even more scars. The only ingredient that has been proven to work on all types of scars of any age is silicone. There are numerous full studies that can be found online to show its effectiveness.

The Verdict on Bio Oil

Although Bio Oil had a clinical trial, the full study was not released and was only performed on Caucasians. One major drawback of Bio Oil is its use of mineral oil as the main ingredient. Mineral oil can clog pores and promote acne in many people which can actually lead to acne scars. The reviews for Bio Oil are mixed at best and our staff did not rank this very high among the scar treatments that we’ve tested.
